Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is known to cause infectious mononucleosis (mono) and is associated with other illnesses like certain types of lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The IgG antibodies targeted by this test indicate a past infection with EBV or ongoing reactivation of the virus. Healthcare providers use this test to aid in the diagnosis of EBV-related illnesses and to monitor the immune response in patients.

For most individuals these antibodies are transient and are often undetectable after 6 months.
