Immunoglobulin M

The Immunoglobulin M (IgM) test measures the level of IgM antibodies in the blood. IgM is one of the first antibodies produced by the immune system in response to an infection. 

Elevated levels of IgM can indicate an active or recent infection, making this test useful for diagnosing acute infections such as viral hepatitis, mononucleosis, and various bacterial infections. The IgM test can also help detect autoimmune diseases and certain immunodeficiency disorders by identifying abnormal antibody levels.

Higher-than-normal IgM levels suggest an active infection or an immune system disorder, while lower levels may indicate a weakened immune response. By providing insights into the body's immune activity, the IgM test aids healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing various infectious and immunological conditions.
