This test is utilized to detect total antibodies (comprising IgG and IgM) against the Hepatitis A virus (HAV), aiding in the assessment of HAV immunity. However, the detection of total antibodies cannot distinguish between vaccination, past resolved infection, or current active infection. In cases where active hepatitis A infection is suspected, it's crucial to conduct HAV IgM testing.

Hepatitis A, caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV), is a vaccine-preventable liver disease. It spreads through the fecal-oral route, commonly via direct person-to-person contact or ingestion of contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A typically manifests as an acute, self-limiting illness without leading to chronic infection.

HAV IgG antibodies, generated in response to vaccination and/or prior HAV infection, persist lifelong, providing protection against reinfection.
