ABO GRP AND RH TYPE; Type and Group, Blood Type

Possible ABO blood groups include O, A, B, or AB. The Rh antigen is another compound that may or may not be present on the surface of red blood cells. The Rh test determines whether this configuration is present ("Rh-positive") or absent ("Rh-negative") on an individual's blood cells.

Human blood is typed by certain markers (called antigens ) on the surface of red blood cells. Blood type may also be done to see if two people are likely to be blood relatives. The most important antigens are blood group antigens (ABO) and the Rh antigen, which is either present (positive, +) or absent (negative, -).

Rhesus (Rh) factor is an inherited protein found on the surface of red blood cells. If your blood has the protein, you're Rh positive. If your blood lacks the protein, you're Rh negative. Rh positive is the most common blood type.

If you have an Rh typing test and the results show you are Rh negative, you may need to have another blood test called an antibody screen. The antibody screen looks for antibodies in your blood. If antibodies are present, it means that you have been exposed to Rh positive blood and developed antibodies to it.
